Why is MyMedicare important for patient care?
Our Centre strengthens our commitment to working together to support our patient’s best health now and in the future by participating in MyMedicare.
MyMedicare is a voluntary registration program that formalises the link between you, your GP and regular medical centre. By registering to MyMedicare, you take greater control of your health, allowing you to navigate your care with the support of your chosen primary care team, who can deliver personalised chronic care tailor to your long-term health.
MyMedicare is a voluntary registration program by the Australian Government that helps strengthen your relationship with your GP and regular medical centre to support better health outcomes. By registering, you may gain access to additional health services and funding.
Who can register?
MyMedicare is free and open to Australians with a Medicare card or a DVA Veteran Card.
To register, you must have had:
- At least two 2 face-to-face appointments with the same medical centre in the last 24 months, or
- One face-to-face visit if the medical centre is in a remote area
People who are facing hardships including those experiencing domestic and family violence and homelessness can register without meeting these requirements.
Registering families:
- Parents/guardians and children can register at the same medical centre if one is already eligible and registered
- Children under 14 years of age must be registered by a parent or guardian, with consent given in person at the centre
- Young people aged 14 to 17 years can register and provide consent without a parent/guardian
MyMedicare helps make your care more connected, consistent and focused on your long-term health.
By registering with MyMedicare, you confirm the link between you and your regular medical centre; you help your care team to support your better health outcomes with:
- Stronger relationship between you and your GP
- Access to MyMedicare services like care plans, referrals and longer
- Medicare-funded telehealth appointments
- More coordinated and regular health check-ins, follow-ups and reviews from your primary care team to manage your ongoing health conditions
- Planning care around you with focus on overall health, not just treating you when you are unwell
- Being first to access new MyMedicare benefits and services
You can register with your regular Medical Centre and select your preferred GP in MyMedicare.

No. Part of the purpose of MyMedicare is to nominate and identify one preferred provider of general healthcare. If you are already registered with another medical centre, but would like to register with us, completing a new registration form will update your registration status.
No, registering with MyMedicare does not restrict your access to any other healthcare providers including other GPs and medical centres. However, to enhance the continuity and avoid gaps of your care, services such as care plans that are available to MyMedicare registered patients may only be provided at the medical centre that you are registered with.
We are required to list each Doctor separately under the Medical Centre’s MyMedicare listing and apologise if your Doctor is not displayed. We would appreciate you letting us know so that we can work quickly to fix this! Please phone the Medical Centre.
No. MyMedicare is a registration system simply shows the name of your regular medical centre and primary care team. MyMedicare cannot hold any of your personal medical information.
My Health Record is an online, electronic medical record that provides patients and their healthcare providers with access to key health information to help with patient care, including in an emergency. My Health Record can include patient health summaries, current medicine lists, immunisation history, and hospital discharge information.
Your chosen medical centre and preferred GP will appear on your My Health Record to ensure other health professionals you see – for example, at a public hospital – will know who to talk to about your regular care.
If you do not wish for this information to display on your My Health Record, you can choose this option in your My Health Record.
Your Medical Centre will have patient brochures available, ask when you are next in, or visit the Department of Health website, https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/mymedicare/patients
