Fertility Support

If you've been trying to conceive without success, you're not alone. Around 1 in 6 Australian couples experience difficulty getting pregnant. Your GP is the first step in investigating and addressing fertility concerns.

We recommend seeing your GP if you've been trying for 12 months (if under 35) or 6 months (if over 35) without success. Earlier consultation is recommended if you have known conditions like PCOS or endometriosis.

Bulk Billing

GP consultations for fertility concerns are bulk billed. Some tests and specialist appointments may have additional costs, but many are covered by Medicare.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women of reproductive age, occurring in around 1 in 10 women. It's a leading cause of infertility but is very manageable with the right treatment.

Diagnosis requires at least 2 of: irregular periods, signs of excess androgens (acne, excess hair), or polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. Your GP can arrange the necessary tests and discuss treatment options.

PCOS Symptoms

Irregular or absent periods
Excess hair growth (hirsutism)
Acne and oily skin
Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Hair thinning on the scalp
Difficulty getting pregnant
Dark patches on skin (acanthosis nigricans)
Pelvic pain

PCOS Treatment Options

Treatment depends on your symptoms and whether you're trying to conceive:

  • Lifestyle changes: Weight management, diet, and exercise can significantly improve symptoms
  • Contraceptive pill: Regulates periods and reduces acne/excess hair (if not trying to conceive)
  • Metformin: Helps with insulin resistance and can restore ovulation
  • Ovulation induction: Medications like Clomid or Letrozole to help you ovulate

Recurrent Miscarriage Support

If you've experienced three or more consecutive miscarriages, investigations may be recommended to identify any underlying causes. This includes blood tests for clotting disorders, hormone levels, and sometimes genetic testing.

Our GPs provide compassionate support, coordinate investigations, and refer you to specialists when appropriate. You don't have to go through this alone.
