Prostate Cancer in Australia

1 in 6 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by age 85. It's the most common cancer in men, but when detected early, the 5-year survival rate is over 95%.

The Australian guidelines recommend that men discuss prostate cancer screening with their GP from age 50, or from age 40-45 if they have a family history of prostate cancer.

Early Detection Saves Lives

When prostate cancer is found early (before it spreads), treatment is most effective. Regular screening through PSA tests and examinations can detect problems before symptoms appear.

PSA Testing

The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test is a simple blood test that measures PSA levels in your blood. Elevated PSA can indicate prostate cancer, but also other conditions like an enlarged prostate (BPH) or prostate infection.

Your GP will discuss the benefits and limitations of PSA testing with you, helping you make an informed decision about screening based on your individual risk factors.

  • Simple blood test at our on-site pathology
  • Results usually available within a few days

Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer

Age

Risk increases significantly after age 50

Family History

Higher risk if father or brother had prostate cancer

Ethnicity

Some ethnic backgrounds have higher risk

Diet & Lifestyle

High-fat diet and obesity may increase risk

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Enlarged prostate is extremely common in older men and is not the same as prostate cancer. Symptoms can include difficulty urinating, weak stream, frequent urination (especially at night), and incomplete bladder emptying.

Your GP can help diagnose BPH and discuss treatment options including:

  • Lifestyle modifications (fluid management, bladder training)
  • Medications to relax the prostate or shrink it
  • Referral to urologist for surgical options if needed
