Medicare Bulk Billing – Digital Signing from 1 July 2026

From 1 July 2026, the way you confirm your Medicare bulk billing is changing. To make things simpler, you will now be able to sign your bulk billing form digitally on your phone – no paper required.

We want to make sure our patients know what to expect, so here is a plain-English summary of the changes. You can also watch the short video above for a quick overview.

What is the Assignment of Benefit form?

When your appointment is bulk billed, you sign an Assignment of Benefit form. This is simply your agreement authorising Medicare to pay your benefit directly to the practice, so there is nothing for you to pay for that service.

Signing this form is required for a service to be bulk billed.

What is changing from 1 July 2026

• No paper needed – the form can now be completed digitally.
• Sign by SMS – you may receive a text message and can simply tap "Accept" on your phone to sign.
• More flexibility – you may be able to sign the form before, during, or after your bulk billed appointment.

What this means for you

• There is nothing extra you need to do today – this is just a more convenient way to do something you already do at bulk billed visits.
• Please make sure the practice has your current mobile number so any digital form reaches you without delay.
• Your appointment can only be bulk billed if you assign your Medicare benefit. If a benefit is not assigned, private fees may apply to that service.
