What is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion is a procedure where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a drip (intravenous or IV). This helps restore your body's iron stores and may improve symptoms associated with iron deficiency anaemia.

Iron infusions are particularly useful when oral iron supplements are not tolerated, not absorbed properly, or when iron levels need to be corrected quickly.

We use modern iron formulations like Ferinject and Monofer, which can be given in a single dose and are well-tolerated by most patients.

Why Iron is Important

Iron helps your body make haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. When iron is low, you may feel tired, weak, and find it hard to concentrate (healthdirect.gov.au).

How Long Does It Take?

  • Infusion: 15-30 minutes
  • Observation: 30 minutes post-infusion
  • Total appointment: ~1-1.5 hours

Safe & Monitored

All iron infusions are administered by experienced doctors in our clinic with full monitoring and resuscitation equipment available.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency anaemia develops gradually and symptoms may be subtle at first. Common signs include:

Fatigue and tiredness
Shortness of breath
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Pale skin
Brittle nails
Cold hands and feet
Headaches
Difficulty concentrating

If you're experiencing these symptoms, book an appointment with your GP for a blood test to check your iron levels.

Who Might Need an Iron Infusion?

Iron infusions are recommended when oral supplements aren't enough or can't be tolerated. Your GP will assess whether an infusion is right for you based on your symptoms, blood test results, and medical history.

People who cannot tolerate oral iron supplements
Severe iron deficiency requiring rapid correction
Women with heavy menstrual bleeding
Pregnant women with iron deficiency
People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Chronic kidney disease patients
Pre-operative patients requiring iron correction
Those with malabsorption conditions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an iron infusion take?

The infusion itself takes 15-30 minutes depending on the dose. You'll need to stay for 30 minutes post-infusion for observation. Allow approximately 1-1.5 hours for your appointment.

Is iron infusion covered by Medicare?

The GP consultation is bulk billed. The iron infusion medication (Ferinject/Monofer) has a PBS subsidy, making it affordable for most patients. We'll provide a clear quote before your appointment.

Are there side effects from iron infusion?

Most people tolerate iron infusions well. Some may experience mild headache, muscle or joint pain, nausea, or temporary brown staining at the injection site. You might feel flushed or warm during the infusion — this usually passes quickly. With some iron formulations, your doctor may check your phosphate levels afterwards. Serious allergic reactions are rare but we monitor you throughout.

How soon will I feel better?

Everyone is different. Some people notice more energy within a few days, while for others it takes a bit longer. We usually do a follow-up blood test at 4-6 weeks to check that your iron levels have come up.

What iron level requires an infusion?

Your GP will assess whether an iron infusion is appropriate based on your blood test results, symptoms, and medical history. Generally, low ferritin combined with symptoms of iron deficiency may indicate the need for an infusion.

How much does an iron infusion cost?

The GP consultation is bulk billed. The iron infusion medication (such as Ferinject or Monofer) may have an out-of-pocket cost depending on your PBS eligibility. We provide a clear quote before your appointment.

Concerned About Your Iron Levels?

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in Australia. If you're experiencing symptoms like fatigue or breathlessness, book a GP appointment to check your iron levels. Read our iron infusion patient guide to learn more about the procedure, costs, and Medicare coverage.
